The best Nespresso machine for most people is the Vertuo Pop+ Deluxe. It costs $109, brews everything from a single espresso to a 12 oz mug, and has a bigger water tank than the regular Pop+. If you mostly drink straight espresso, get the Essenza Mini with Aeroccino instead. It’s rated 4.6 stars, the highest of any machine here.
But the bigger choice comes before the model. Nespresso sells two systems, Vertuo and Original, and their pods don’t swap. Pick the wrong one and you’re stuck with it for years. This guide explains the difference in plain terms, then covers the 7 machines worth buying on Amazon right now.
Quick answer
Buy a Vertuo machine if you drink regular mugs of coffee most mornings and want espresso now and then. Start with the Vertuo Pop+ Deluxe.
Buy an Original machine if you drink espresso, lattes and cappuccinos, and you want cheaper pods from brands other than Nespresso. Start with the Essenza Mini with Aeroccino.
Skip Nespresso if you want 12-cup pots or the lowest cost per cup. A drip machine or a K-Cup brewer will cost less to run.

Vertuo vs Original: The Real Difference
This is the decision that matters most. Every machine below belongs to one system or the other, and pods from one won’t fit the other.
| Vertuo | Original | |
|---|---|---|
| How it brews | Spins the pod and reads a barcode on its rim | Pump pressure, up to 19 bar |
| Drink sizes | Single and double espresso, plus 5, 8, 12 and 18 oz coffees (18 oz on some models) | Espresso and lungo (a longer espresso) |
| Pod price from Nespresso | About $1.00 to $2.25 per pod | About $0.85 to $1.10 per pod |
| Pods from other brands | Starbucks by Nespresso, otherwise very limited | Many brands, sold in grocery stores and on Amazon |
| Best for | Mug coffee drinkers | Espresso and milk drink fans |
Pod prices come from a January 2026 price breakdown by Your Dream Coffee (retrieved 2026-10-07). Nespresso changes pod prices often, so treat them as a range.
How each system brews
Original works like a small espresso machine. A pump pushes hot water through the pod at high pressure. You get a short, strong shot with crema on top. Press the lungo button and it runs more water through the same pod for a longer, milder drink.
Vertuo works differently. The machine reads a barcode printed on the pod’s rim, then spins the pod while it injects water. The barcode tells it how much water to use, how hot, and how fast to spin. That’s how one machine can brew both a single espresso and an 18 oz mug.
Is Vertuo coffee real espresso?
Not in the strict sense. Vertuo’s espresso pods make a strong, short coffee, but the spinning method isn’t the pressure brewing that defines espresso. The thick layer on top of a Vertuo cup is a foam created by the spin. It looks like crema but it’s lighter and bubblier.
Original machines are closer to true espresso because they use pump pressure. Neither system matches a proper espresso machine with fresh-ground beans. If that’s what you want, see our best espresso machines under $300.
The pod lock-in
This is the part most buyers miss. Original pods have been copied by lots of brands, so you can buy them at the grocery store or in bulk on Amazon, often for less than Nespresso’s own.
Vertuo pods are different. Nespresso holds patents on the Vertuo capsule shape and extraction method, and Tasting Table reports they run until 2029 (retrieved 2026-10-07). In practice, your Vertuo choices are Nespresso’s own range plus Starbucks by Nespresso Vertuo pods.
Our take: if you’ll brew two or more pods a day, the cheaper Original pods add up fast. If you mainly want one big mug in the morning, Vertuo is the only Nespresso system that makes it.
The Best Nespresso Machines
Vertuo Pop+ Deluxe – Best Overall
The Pop+ Deluxe is the Vertuo machine to buy if you don’t have a special reason to pay more. It brews 5 drink sizes: single espresso, double espresso, and 5, 8 and 12 oz coffees. Any of them can be brewed hot or over ice. It heats up in about 30 seconds.
It costs $10 more than the regular Pop+, and that $10 gets you two useful upgrades. The water tank holds 37 oz instead of 25 oz, so you refill it less often. And used pods drop into the bin automatically, so you don’t have to open the head and pull them out.
It’s rated 4.3 stars across 1,847 Amazon ratings, the best of the three Vertuo Pop models we checked. The water tank sits on the side, which keeps the machine short enough to fit under upper cabinets.
The downside: the biggest cup is 12 oz. If you fill a large travel mug every morning, you’ll need a Vertuo machine with the 18 oz setting, like the Vertuo Up or Vertuo Next. There’s no milk frother in the box either.
Skip it if you drink lattes daily. Get a Lattissima model instead.
Specs: Vertuo system, 5 cup sizes up to 12 oz, 37 oz removable tank, about 30 second heat-up, automatic pod ejection, hot or over ice

Vertuo Pop+ – Best Budget
At $99, the Pop+ is the cheapest way into Vertuo. It brews the same 5 drink sizes as the Deluxe, hot or over ice, with the same 30 second heat-up and descaling alert. It also comes in lots of bright colors, which is part of its appeal.
The trade-off is the 25 oz water tank. That’s about three 8 oz coffees before a refill, less if you brew 12 oz mugs. For one person, that’s fine. For a couple sharing the machine, it gets old fast.
It’s rated 4.2 stars across 2,525 Amazon ratings. Note that Amazon pools ratings across the Pop+ colors and some bundles, so you can’t see how one color version rates on its own.
The downside: small tank, 12 oz maximum cup, and no automatic pod ejection.
Skip it if more than one person drinks coffee at home. The Deluxe costs $10 more and fixes the tank problem.
Specs: Vertuo system, 5 cup sizes up to 12 oz, 25 oz removable side tank, about 30 second heat-up, hot or over ice, descaling alert

Vertuo Up with Aeroccino – Best for Iced Coffee
The Vertuo Up is Nespresso’s newest Vertuo machine, and it fixes a few things that bug Vertuo owners. It’s ready to brew in about 3 seconds instead of 30. The 47 oz water tank is the biggest here, and it can be moved to different positions around the machine, so it fits awkward counters.
It brews 6 sizes, including the 18 oz mug that the Pop+ models can’t make. There’s also a Coffee Creations button that brews a stronger, more concentrated coffee meant to be poured over ice. That’s useful if you’ve ever had watery iced coffee from a regular pod. Our iced latte guide shows how to build the drink at home.
This bundle includes the Aeroccino frother, which makes hot or cold milk foam for lattes and cappuccinos. If you don’t need milk, Amazon also sells the Vertuo Up without the frother.
The downside: you have to use the Nespresso app to change cup size or brew temperature. The machine itself has very few controls. It’s also new, so it only has 143 Amazon ratings so far (4.1 stars). In a hands-on test published on inkl, the reviewer measured it at 70.9 dB while brewing and noted some liquid dripping into the cup before brewing started (retrieved 2026-10-07).
Skip it if you don’t want an app involved in making coffee.
Specs: Vertuo system, 6 cup sizes up to 18 oz, 47 oz multi-position tank, ready in about 3 seconds, Coffee Creations iced button, app control, Aeroccino frother included

Essenza Mini with Aeroccino – Best for Espresso
The Essenza Mini is the smallest Nespresso machine, and it’s the best pick if you drink espresso. It’s an Original machine, so it uses pump pressure (up to 19 bar) and takes the cheaper Original pods from Nespresso and other brands.
It has two buttons: espresso and lungo. You can reprogram both to the volume you like. It heats up in about 25 seconds and switches itself off after 9 minutes of not being used.
Here’s a pricing quirk worth knowing. On October 7, Amazon listed this bundle with the Aeroccino frother at $179.95, the same price as the Essenza Mini without the frother. At the same price, the bundle is clearly the better buy. Check both listings before you order, since this can change.
The bundle is rated 4.6 stars across 1,523 ratings. The machine-only listing has 4.5 stars across 5,099 ratings. Those are the best scores of any machine in this guide.
The downside: it only makes espresso and lungo. There’s no way to brew an 8 oz or 12 oz cup of regular coffee from one pod. The 20.3 oz water tank is also small.
Skip it if you want a big mug of coffee. Get a Vertuo machine.
Specs: Original system, 2 programmable cup sizes, up to 19 bar, about 25 second heat-up, 20.3 oz tank, auto off after 9 minutes, Aeroccino frother included

Lattissima One – Best One-Touch Lattes (Original)
The Lattissima One makes milk drinks with one button. You pour milk into the small jug, clip it on, and press for a cappuccino, latte macchiato or espresso macchiato. The machine froths the milk and pulls the shot into your cup. No separate frother to wash.
It also brews plain espresso and lungo, and it uses Original pods, so you keep access to cheaper pods from other brands.
The milk jug is single-serve. You fill it for each drink, which means no milk sits in the machine going warm. It has a detachable lid and goes in the dishwasher.
The downside: it’s rated 3.9 stars across 882 ratings, which is lower than the simpler machines. At $321.99, you’re paying about $140 more than the Essenza Mini bundle for built-in milk. You also only get 3 milk recipes and 2 coffee sizes.
Skip it if you don’t mind washing a separate frother. The Essenza Mini bundle does the same drinks for less.
Specs: Original system, espresso and lungo, 3 one-touch milk recipes, single-serve dishwasher-safe milk jug, removable water tank, descaling alert

Vertuo Lattissima – Best One-Touch Lattes (Vertuo)
The Vertuo Lattissima is the one-touch milk machine for Vertuo fans. It brews all 6 Vertuo sizes, from a single espresso to an 18 oz coffee, hot or over ice. Then it adds one-touch cappuccinos, lattes and hot milk foam on top.
The milk tank holds 16 oz, which is enough for a few drinks. It detaches and goes in the dishwasher, and you can put it in the fridge between uses.
This is the most flexible machine in the guide. A morning mug, an afternoon latte and an iced coffee can all come from one machine without extra gadgets.
The downside: it costs $396.99 and is rated 3.9 stars across 515 ratings. You’re also paying Vertuo pod prices for every drink, with very few cheaper pod options.
Skip it if you’ll mainly drink black coffee. The Vertuo Up with Aeroccino does lattes too for about $200 less.
Specs: Vertuo system, 6 cup sizes up to 18 oz, one-touch milk recipes, 16 oz detachable dishwasher-safe milk tank, about 30 second heat-up, hot or over ice

Creatista Plus – Best for Latte Art
The Creatista Plus is for people who want café-style milk, not just foam. It has a real steam wand that froths milk on its own in a stainless steel jug. You pick one of 3 milk temperatures, and the wand stops on its own when the milk is ready. The result is smoother milk that you can pour into simple latte art.
It’s an Original machine with a 19 bar pump, heats up in about 3 seconds, and makes 8 preset espresso and milk recipes. A display walks you through cleaning and descaling.
It’s rated 4.2 stars across 1,949 ratings, the best score of the milk machines here.
The downside: $524 is a lot for a pod machine. At that price you could buy a semi-automatic espresso machine with a steam wand and use fresh beans instead. It’s still Original only, so no big mugs of coffee.
Skip it if you’re happy with foam from an Aeroccino. The difference matters most if you care about latte art.
Specs: Original system, 8 recipes, automatic steam wand with 3 temperature levels, 19 bar pump, about 3 second heat-up, stainless milk jug, eco mode

Also Considered
Vertuo Next ($113.70, 4.1 stars from 5,627 ratings): only 5.5 inches wide and it brews the 18 oz size the Pop+ can’t. A good pick if you need a tall mug and a slim machine. We still prefer the Pop+ Deluxe for its higher rating and automatic pod ejection.
Vertuo Creatista ($524, 3.6 stars from 311 ratings): a Vertuo machine with the Creatista steam wand. The idea is great, but it has the lowest rating of any machine we checked, so we can’t recommend it over the Original Creatista Plus.
Gran Lattissima ($479, 3.9 stars from 148 ratings): 9 one-touch drinks and a premium finish. It costs about $160 more than the Lattissima One without a better rating.
Creatista Pro: listed as currently unavailable on Amazon, so we left it out.
How to Choose a Nespresso Machine
1. Pick the system first
Ask yourself what you drink most often. A big mug of coffee points to Vertuo. Espresso and milk drinks point to Original. If you drink both equally, Original pods are cheaper, but only Vertuo makes a true mug-sized cup.
2. Decide how you want your milk
Here are your milk options:
- Aeroccino frother: a separate jug that heats and froths milk. Cheap, easy and works for hot or cold foam. You wash it after each use.
- Built-in milk jug (Lattissima): one button does the whole drink. Most convenient, but these machines cost more and rate a bit lower.
- Steam wand (Creatista): the closest to café milk, and the most expensive.
- No milk at all: if you take your coffee black, skip milk features and save $70 to $300.
Already own a frother? You don’t need a bundle. If you use oat or almond milk, our oat milk frother guide covers which frothers handle plant milk well.
3. Match the water tank to your household
The tanks here range from 20.3 oz (Essenza Mini) to 47 oz (Vertuo Up). For one person drinking espresso, a small tank is fine. For two people drinking 8 to 12 oz mugs, get at least 37 oz or you’ll be refilling daily.
4. Check your counter space
The Essenza Mini and Vertuo Next are the slimmest. Side-mounted tanks on the Pop+ models keep them short enough to fit under cabinets. For more small-space options, see our best coffee makers for small kitchens.
5. Factor in pod cost
At one pod a day, a $0.30 difference per pod is about $110 a year. At two pods a day, it’s over $200. Over a few years, pods cost far more than the machine. That’s why the Vertuo vs Original choice matters more than the price tag on the box.

How We Picked
We started with the Nespresso machines currently sold on Amazon US, then checked each listing on October 7, 2026 for price, cup sizes, tank size, milk features and Amazon rating. We compared those against what top-ranking Nespresso guides recommend, and we cut machines that were unavailable or rated well below similar models. Specs come from the Amazon listings and Nespresso’s own product claims. We didn’t run our own brewing tests, and where a figure comes from an outside test, we link to it.
Nespresso FAQ
Can Vertuo machines use Original pods?
No. Vertuo and Original pods are different shapes and brew in different ways. A Vertuo machine won’t take Original pods, and an Original machine won’t take Vertuo pods.
Can you use Starbucks pods in a Nespresso machine?
Yes, if you buy the right version. Starbucks sells pods for both systems under the Starbucks by Nespresso name. Check the box says “Vertuo” or “Original” to match your machine.
Which Nespresso machine is cheapest to run?
Original machines. Nespresso’s own Original pods cost less than Vertuo pods, and you can also buy Original-compatible pods from other brands, which are often cheaper still.
Can you make iced coffee with a Nespresso?
Yes. All the Vertuo machines in this guide brew over ice. The Vertuo Up adds a Coffee Creations button for a stronger iced brew. With an Original machine, pull an espresso over ice and add cold milk.
How often should you descale a Nespresso machine?
Most Nespresso machines have a descaling alert that tells you when. As a rough guide, plan on every few months, more often if you have hard water. Our descaling guide walks through the process.
Do Nespresso machines make real espresso?
Original machines come close, because they use pump pressure. Vertuo espresso is a strong short coffee made by spinning the pod. For true espresso, you need an espresso machine and fresh-ground beans.
